Best Motorcycle Rides from Des Moines, Iowa

Iowa gets written off as flat, and whoever started that rumor never left the interstate. Within a tank of gas from Des Moines you can ride river bluffs, wooded switchbacks, and gravel-free sweepers that would hold their own in states with mountains on the license plate. Here are the day rides we send people on when they ask where to go this weekend.

Madison County covered bridges

An hour southwest of Des Moines, the backroads around Winterset link six covered bridges through creek valleys and farm hills. The bridges are the destination; the prize is the roads between them, narrow, shaded, and quiet on a weekday morning. Stop in Winterset for pie and a walk around the square.

The Loess Hills National Scenic Byway

Along Iowa's western edge, the Loess Hills are a landform that exists in only one other place on earth, and the byway that threads them is the best continuous riding in the state. Ridge-top views over the Missouri River valley, tight wooded corners, and towns like Moorhead and Pisgah where the café conversation stops when boots hit the floor. Make it a long day or stay the night in Council Bluffs.

The Driftless Area and the Great River Road

Northeast Iowa missed the last glacier, and it shows. From Guttenberg north to Lansing, the Great River Road rides the Mississippi under 400-foot limestone bluffs, and every road that climbs away from the river pays you back in corners. Pikes Peak State Park above McGregor has the view everyone photographs; Balltown Road north of Dubuque is the ridgeline ride everyone remembers.

Ledges and the High Trestle country

Short on time? An hour north of the city, the roads around Ledges State Park near Boone drop through sandstone canyons that feel smuggled in from somewhere else, and the Des Moines River valley routes between Boone and Madrid make an honest afternoon loop out of it.

When a day ride isn't enough

The Driftless is where we take riders on our four-day Mississippi River tour, and it's the one trip we run that starts and ends right here in Des Moines. No flights, no bike transport, just your motorcycle, a guide who knows which bluff roads are worth the detour, a support vehicle behind you, and a historic river-town hotel each night. Three to six bikes, $3,850, and a refundable $200 deposit holds your spot.
